چکیده
The Kahikinui Archaeological Project is a multi-phase, long-term research endeavor initiated in 1994, under the overall direction of Prof. Patrick V. Kirch. The project is geographically situated in the ancient moku (district) of Kahikinui, on the southern, leeward side of Maui, Hawaiian Islands. The Kahikinui Archaeological Project seeks to explore and define the indigenous Hawaiian structures of economic, social, and political organization which had developed during the late Expansion and Proto-Historic Periods of pre-contact Hawaiian history (Kirch 1985), ca. A.D. 12001795. This research--critical to understanding the conditions that led to the local transformation of Hawaiian society--is of broad-ranging anthropological significance. Specifically, an investigation of proto-historic Hawaiian society helps to enhance our knowledge of the conditions and processes under which social formations cross a fundamental 'threshold' of organizational complexity.

Interpolity exchange of basalt tools facilitated via elite control in Hawaiian archaic states.
Ethnohistoric accounts of late precontact Hawaiian archaic states emphasize the independence of chiefly controlled territories (ahupua'a) based on an agricultural, staple economy. However, elite control of unevenly distributed resources, such as high-quality volcanic rock for adze production, may have provided an alternative source of economic power. To test this hypothesis we used nondestructi...
متن کاملMAUI: An Interface Design Tool Based on Matrix Algebra
We describe MAUI, a user interface design tool that is based on a matrix algebra model of interaction. MAUI can be used to build and analyse designs for interactive systems, such as handheld devices. This paper describes MAUI, its advantages and underlying mathematical approach. MAUI is implemented in Java and XML, which allows flexible integration with other parts of the design life cycle, suc...

A new species of pontoniine shrimp, Onycocaris maui sp. nov., from Maui Island, Hawai'i, is described and illustrated. A heterosexual pair were found in an intertidal Haliclona sponge. A member of the O. quadratophthalma species group, its relationships are discussed and a key provided for their identification.

2 Abstract— In this paper we describe the Multimodal Affective User Interface (MAUI) we created to capture its users' emotional physiological signals via wearable computers and visualize the categorized signals in terms of recognized emotion. MAUI aims at 1) giving feedback to the users about their emotional states via various modalities (e.g. mirroring the user's facial expressions and describ...
